  • Goedhuis, November 2023

The 64-year-old vines on the Pinson plot, adjacent to their parcel of Forêts, yield a fuller style of wine, which Charlene Pinson says is thanks to the mix of clay and chalk-based soils. Notes of acacia honey and quince highlight this vineyard's character, producing a wine that fills the mouth with succulent breadth of creamy ripe fruit and a striking seashell salinity on the finish.

  • Burghound, October 2023, Score: 90-93

Here too there is a background application of wood framing the aromas of cool and much more floral-scented nose where iodine and algae nuances can be picked up. The sleek, refined and highly energetic medium weight flavors deliver sneaky good length on the balanced finish that could also use a few years of cellaring to develop better depth. Drink 2029+

  • Decanter, October 2023, Score: 92

Cool, focused and refined, this balances fruit ripeness with a fine line of acidity and a mineral edge to finish. Not a blockbuster, but very refined and classy. One for relatively early drinking. Possibly better known for its Mont de Milieu, in 2022 the Pinson Montmains runs it close. Drink 2024-2028

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2023, Score: 92-94

From vines in the blue clay sector, planted in 1956. Pale colour once again. The bouquet is very classical, faintly reductive with a pure white fruit. Plenty of energy, tightly coiled, with a lifted finish. Very stylish and with fine persistence. Apple and citrus at the finish, I love the aftertaste. Drink from 2027-2035.

The Pinson family vie with the Droins as one of the oldest in the town, with documents showing their presence back in 1640, while 1880 shows the first records of Louis Pinson selling bottles of their wine under the family label. It is now run by brothers Christophe and Laurent, joined by Laurent’s daughter, Charlène. The family team oversee 12 hectares of vineyards, including 2.5 hectares of Les Clos and 4.75 hectares of Mont de Milieu, from which they make extraordinarily fine and classical Chablis. They like to use oak barrels for maturation, although the influence of new oak is only ever a gentle whisper in the background of their steely wines. Their wines consistently show the raciness and elegance of fine Chablis.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
